Why this comes up
"How much does my commute cost" is a different question than a general fuel-cost or per-mile calculation, it's specifically about the recurring trip you take for work, and it usually includes parking and tolls that a generic fuel calculator never asks about. Seeing the real annual number often changes how people think about a longer commute for a better job, or a shorter one with a pay cut.
How we calculated this
Annual commute miles are your one-way distance doubled, times your workdays per year. We apply your fuel cost per mile plus any marginal wear-and-tear estimate to that mileage, then add parking and tolls annualized separately, since those accrue whether or not you drove that specific day.
Worked example, using this page's own defaults (15 miles one-way, 240 workdays, 28 MPG, $3.50/gallon): the commute runs a meaningful annual total even with no parking or tolls entered, run the calculator above with your own numbers, especially if you pay for parking.
What this means
- Parking and tolls can exceed what a modest MPG improvement would ever save you, if those costs are significant, they deserve more attention than chasing a slightly better fuel economy number.
- This number is a real ongoing cost of a job's location, worth weighing directly against salary when comparing offers with different commute distances.

Limitations
