True Cost of Car Ownership

The payment is not the cost. See every material cost decomposed over your chosen horizon.

Why this comes up

The payment is the number on your statement, but it's rarely the number that actually determines whether owning a car strains your budget. Depreciation, fuel, insurance, and maintenance all add up quietly in the background. This engine puts every material cost side by side over a horizon you choose.

How we calculated this

We sum depreciation, financing interest actually paid, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs, and registration over your chosen horizon, without double-counting purchase price and depreciation.

Worked example, using this page's own defaults (3 years, $2,500/year depreciation, $500 financing interest, 12,000 miles at 28 MPG, $3.50 gas, $1,400 insurance, $600 maintenance, $400 repairs, $150 registration): the total comes to roughly$16,700 over 3 years, about $465/month. Run the calculator above with your own numbers.

What this means

  • Financing interest is usually a small share of the total, depreciation and operating costs dominate even after the loan is paid off, a paid-off car is not a free car.
  • See Vehicle Cost Per Mile for the same economics reframed per mile, which splits fixed from variable cost and answers "what does an extra trip cost."
  • If this total feels high relative to your budget, Car Affordability Calculator can help you check what price range actually fits once operating costs are subtracted.

Limitations

Depreciation is your own planning estimate; no current valuation feed is used. See Methodology.

Methodology

This engine combines Vehicle Economics' fixed-rate amortization model (the standard loan-payment formula run out as a full month-by-month schedule), ownership total cost model (every ownership cost, depreciation, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs, and fees, summed over your horizon), and fuel and charging cost model (your own miles, MPG or kWh, and rates converted directly to a dollar cost). See Methodology for the full detail.
