Parking + Tolls True Commute Cost

Fixed, often-overlooked commute charges that stay in place even if your fuel or energy cost per mile improves.

Why this comes up

Fuel or charging cost gets most of the attention in commute math, but parking and tolls are real, recurring charges that do not go away even if you switch to a more efficient vehicle. This engine isolates just those two charges, the same way Tire Cost Per Mile and Insurance Impact isolate their own single component from the site's larger ownership model.

How we calculated this

Monthly parking and tolls are summed and multiplied by 12 for the annual figure, then divided by your workdays per year for a per-workday figure. If you enter a total annual commute cost from Commute Cost Calculator, we also show what share of that total these two charges represent.

Worked example, using this page's own defaults ($150/month parking, $60/month tolls, 240 workdays): that is $2,520 a year, or about $10.50 per workday, before a single gallon of gas or kWh of electricity.

What this means

  • Parking and tolls are highly local, a downtown commute can carry a very different figure than a suburban one with free parking.
  • These charges do not scale with mileage the way fuel does, so a higher-MPG or EV switch will not touch this number at all.
  • See Commute Cost Calculator for the full picture, fuel or energy cost included.

Limitations

Your monthly parking and toll figures are your own estimates, held flat across the year; real rates can vary by season or location. See Methodology.

Methodology

This engine uses Vehicle Economics' ownership total cost normalization convention, annualizing a recurring monthly charge. See Methodology for the full detail.
