Tire Cost Per Mile

Tires wear down continuously, but the bill only shows up once, all at once. Spread that cost across the miles that actually caused it.

Why this comes up

You have a real tire quote and a life expectancy, either from a shop or your own experience, and you want to know what that translates to as an ongoing cost, not just a one-time bill when the tires wear out. Treating it as a per-mile or per-year reserve turns an occasional large expense into a predictable one.

How we calculated this

Cost per mile is the all-in set cost, including installation and fees, divided by the expected life in miles. We multiply that by your annual miles to get an annual reserve target, and divide by twelve for a monthly figure.

Worked example, using this page's own defaults ($640 tires, $80 installation, 50,000-mile life, 12,000 annual miles): the cost per mile comes out to a small fraction of a cent that adds up to a real annual figure, run the calculator above with your own quote.

What this means

  • Purchase price alone understates the real cost when installation and fees are recurring every time you replace a set, always use the all-in price.
