Lease Buyout Market-Value Break-Even Calculator
Solve the exact market value at which buying out your lease starts to make sense, before you get a formal appraisal.
Why this comes up
Lease Buyout Calculator answers "is buying out worth it" once you already have a market-value estimate. This engine answers the question that usually comes first: what does the car actually need to be worth before getting a real appraisal is even worth the effort?
How we calculated this
The cash break-even is simply your all-in buyout cost, residual or purchase option price, plus the purchase option fee, plus tax and title fees. If you would finance the buyout, we add the financing interest on top, since that raises the value the car needs to clear to still come out ahead.
Worked example, using this page's own defaults ($18,000 residual, $350 fee, $200 tax/title): the cash break-even market value is $18,550. Financed at 7% over 48 months, the break-even rises by the added interest.
What this means
- If your car is worth more than this figure, buying out captures real equity; if it is worth less, returning the car is the better financial move.
- Financing the buyout raises the bar, the car needs to be worth more to still come out ahead once financing cost is included.
- Once you have a real market-value estimate, Lease Buyout Calculator runs the full decision, including a specific comparable-used comparison if you want one.
Limitations
This does not estimate your car's actual market value, it tells you the threshold to compare a real appraisal against. See Methodology.
Methodology
This engine reuses Vehicle Economics' lease buyout and amortization models. See Methodology for the full detail.
