Early Lease Exit Cost
An early-termination quote from your lessor can look expensive in isolation. Set it next to what finishing the lease normally would have cost anyway.
Why this comes up
Circumstances change, a job relocation, a growing family, a totaled trade-in candidate, and you need to know whether your lessor's actual early-termination quote is cheaper than just riding out the remaining term. This organizes that comparison from your real quote, not an invented formula, lessors calculate termination cost differently and this never recreates their math.
How we calculated this
Keep cost is your remaining monthly payments plus any other costs you'd incur by keeping the lease to term (excess mileage, wear charges you already expect). We compare that directly against your lessor's quoted exit cost.
Worked example, using this page's own defaults ($2,500 quote, 8 months remaining, $350 payment): keeping the lease to term costs $2,800 in remaining payments alone, so exiting wins by $300 here, run the calculator above with your own real quote.
What this means
- Early termination can be substantially larger than the sum of remaining payments, that's exactly why you need an actual quote, not an estimate, before deciding.
- If exiting wins and you're considering buying the vehicle instead of walking away, see Lease Buyout Calculator to compare that path too.
- Excess mileage projected before the natural end date belongs in "other costs if you keep it," check Lease Mileage Overage Calculator if you're not sure of that figure.
Limitations
This does not calculate or estimate an early-termination fee, it only compares a quote you've already obtained against the keep-cost baseline. No legal or contractual rights interpretation is provided. See Methodology.
Methodology
This engine combines Vehicle Economics' ownership total cost model (every ownership cost, depreciation, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs, and fees, summed over your horizon) and lease payment and buyout model (cap cost, residual, and money factor split into a depreciation charge and a rent charge). See Methodology for the full detail.
