Why this comes up

A mechanic has already given you a real number, not a hypothetical. That changes the question from "should I keep repairing this car in general" (Keep vs Replace Car) to something narrower and more urgent: does paying this specific quote still beat replacing, once every other cost on both sides is counted honestly? Most people compare the repair quote against a car payment alone, which understates what a replacement actually costs.

How we calculated this

The repair path sums your quote plus every other forward cost of keeping the car over your horizon: remaining loan interest, depreciation, fuel or energy, insurance, maintenance, and any other repairs you expect. The replace path sums the same categories for a replacement, including transaction costs. Whichever total is lower wins. We also solve the repair-cost ceiling: how large this specific quote would need to be before replacing becomes the cheaper path, holding everything else constant.

Worked example, using this page's own defaults: the repair path totals$25,100 (including the $1,800 quote), the replace path totals$37,600, so paying the repair wins by $12,500. The ceiling for this specific quote lands around $14,300, far above what was actually quoted.

What this means

  • Compare the ceiling to the actual quote, not the quote to a car payment: a quote well under the ceiling is a straightforward "pay it," even if it feels large in isolation.
  • If this is one of several repairs you expect over the next year or two, this engine only prices the one quote in front of you; use Keep vs Replace Car with an annualized repair figure for the bigger pattern.
  • A quote near the ceiling is the point to seriously get a replacement quote, not split the difference on gut feel.

Limitations

This model only knows the dollar figures you enter; it cannot judge the mechanical risk of deferring or repeating a repair, or the inconvenience of unreliable transportation. Weigh those separately. See Methodology.

This engine combines Vehicle Economics' ownership total cost model (every ownership cost, depreciation, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs, and fees, summed over your horizon) and break-even search model (a closed-form solve where one exists, otherwise a bounded search over a stated plausible range).
