How much does relying on public charging actually cost compared to mostly charging at home?

Why this comes up

EV Home Charging Cost lets you slide one scenario's home share up and down, which is useful for exploring a range but doesn't directly answer a decision most EV owners actually face at some point: choosing between two concrete, named strategies. An apartment dweller weighing mostly-public charging against paying to install a home charger, or a homeowner deciding whether it's worth the hassle of plugging in every night versus relying on a fast charger near work, both need the two real options priced side by side, not one slider they'd have to move back and forth themselves.

How we calculated this

Each strategy's annual cost uses the same fuel and charging cost model, just with a different home-charging share applied to the same annual miles, efficiency, and per-kWh rates. Whichever strategy costs less wins, and the gap between them is reported directly, since that gap is what a real decision (like whether to install a charger) actually turns on.

Worked example, using this page's own defaults: the mostly-home strategy costs$672 a year against $1,456 for the mostly-public strategy, a gap of $784 a year, more than double the cost just from where the electricity comes from.

What this means

  • A public-charging-heavy strategy can cost nearly as much as gas on a per-mile basis, eroding most of an EV's typical advantage, this is the scenario worth checking before assuming an EV will automatically save money if you can't reliably charge at home.
