Hybrid vs Gas Calculator

Does a hybrid actually cost less than a comparable gas car once the purchase premium and financing are counted?

Horizon
Hybrid
Gas

Why this comes up

A hybrid usually costs more upfront than the equivalent gas trim, and the fuel-economy gap alone doesn't say whether that premium pays off. This engine runs the full ownership comparison, purchase, financing, residual value, and fuel, over your actual horizon.

How we calculated this

For each car, total cost is the down payment plus payments made over your horizon minus the equity you'd still hold, plus fuel, insurance, maintenance, and repairs over the same horizon. Whichever total is lower wins, the same general two-candidate engine as Car A vs Car B Total Cost, with defaults built around a hybrid-vs-gas scenario.

Worked example, using this page's own defaults: the hybrid totals $33,339over 5 years against $35,159 for the gas car, so the hybrid wins by$1,820, despite its higher purchase price.

What this means

  • A hybrid's premium is not automatically recovered by fuel savings alone, residual value and financing terms move the total as much as MPG does.
  • Low annual miles shrink a hybrid's fuel-cost advantage fast, this comparison is far more sensitive to miles than to gas price.
  • See EV vs Gas Cost Calculator if a full electric vehicle is also a real option, not just the hybrid-vs-gas question.

Limitations

This models gas-powered and hybrid vehicles only, not plug-in hybrids with a meaningful electric-only range. Ending values are your own planning estimates, not appraisals. See Methodology.

Methodology

This engine combines Vehicle Economics' fixed-rate amortization model (the standard loan-payment formula run out as a full month-by-month schedule), equity and depreciation projection model (your value and loan payoff projected forward from your own depreciation figure until they cross), ownership total cost model (every ownership cost, depreciation, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs, and fees, summed over your horizon), and fuel and charging cost model (your own miles, MPG or kWh, and rates converted directly to a dollar cost). See Methodology for the full detail.
