How much would an EV actually save you on just your commute?

Why this comes up

EV vs Gas Cost Calculator answers the full-ownership question, including the purchase price premium, but that's a bigger commitment than most people are ready to reason through on the spot. Sometimes you just want to know what an EV would save on the one thing you drive every day and can picture clearly: your commute, isolated from the bigger purchase decision. It's a smaller, more concrete question that's often the first one people actually ask themselves before they're ready to run the full numbers.

How we calculated this

Annual commute miles is your one-way distance times two, times workdays per year. Each option's energy cost per mile (electricity or gas) is applied to those miles, plus any parking and tolls, which are held equal on both sides and cancel out of the savings figure since they don't depend on which vehicle you drive.

Worked example, using this page's own defaults: a 15-mile commute, 240 workdays a year, costs $403 a year in an EV against $926 in gas, a savings of $523 a year, about $2.18 per workday.

What this means

  • A commute-only view can look far more favorable to an EV than the full-ownership picture, because it excludes the purchase-price premium entirely, treat this as one input to a bigger decision, not the whole decision.
  • Heavy public charging can erase or reverse this advantage, check your real charging mix, not just a best-case assumption built around mostly-home charging.

Limitations

This is energy cost only, it excludes purchase price, financing, depreciation, insurance, maintenance, and repairs, all of which can move in either direction between an EV and a gas car and are not reflected in this commute-only figure. See Methodology.
