Private Sale Price Needed to Beat Trade-In Calculator
Solve the minimum private-sale price you need to actually come out ahead of a known trade-in offer.
Why this comes up
"Beat the trade-in offer" is not the same target as the trade-in offer itself, once you account for prep costs, negotiation room, and anything the trade-in already accounted for. This engine solves the actual floor price you need before you list the car.
How we calculated this
We reuse Private Sale vs Trade-In's own net-proceeds math, inverted: the price at which your private-sale net proceeds exactly equal the trade-in's net proceeds after its own transaction cost and any tax credit.
Worked example, using this page's own defaults ($9,000 trade offer, $6,000 payoff, $300 prep cost, no trade transaction cost or tax credit): run the calculator above for the exact price floor.
What this means
- The real floor is usually higher than the trade-in offer itself, since it also has to cover every private-sale cost the trade-in does not carry.
- A trade-in tax credit (where your state taxes only the price difference) raises the private-sale price floor further, since the trade-in effectively gets a tax discount the private sale does not.
- Once you have a real asking price in mind, Private Sale vs Trade-In runs the direct side-by-side comparison.
Limitations
This is the price floor to match the trade-in's proceeds, not a claim about what price you can actually achieve in the market. See Methodology.
Methodology
This engine reuses Private Sale vs Trade-In's own net-proceeds function, inverted for price. See Methodology for the full detail.
