Salvage/Rebuilt Title Vehicle Economics Calculator

Is a rebuilt or salvage title car's discount actually worth it once insurance and resale friction are counted?

Why this comes up

A salvage or rebuilt title car is priced well below a clean-title equivalent, but that discount does not arrive for free: insurance is often costlier or harder to get, resale buyers demand their own discount later, and the vehicle's repair history carries real unknowns. This engine weighs the sticker discount against those three real costs instead of comparing sticker prices alone.

How we calculated this

We start with the sticker discount, clean-title price minus salvage-title price, then subtract your stated annual insurance increase over your ownership horizon, subtract a resale discount applied to the clean-title price, and subtract a risk reserve for unknown repair history. What's left is the net savings from actually going with the salvage-title car.

Worked example, using this page's own defaults ($18,000 clean vs $13,000 salvage, $300/year insurance increase, 20% resale discount, $1,500 risk reserve, 5 years): run the calculator above to see the exact net savings and whether it clears zero.

What this means

  • The resale discount usually matters most on a longer hold, since it is only realized when you eventually sell or trade the car.
  • An insurance quote is the single most important number here, get an actual quote for the specific salvage vehicle before relying on an estimate.
  • See a pre-purchase inspection engine before finalizing, a mechanical inspection is the best way to size the risk reserve realistically instead of guessing.

Limitations

This is not a substitute for a qualified inspection or an actual insurance quote; the risk reserve you enter is your own estimate, not a guarantee of what repairs will cost. SeeMethodology.

Methodology

This engine combines Vehicle Economics' ownership total cost framing with a direct sticker-discount-minus-friction-costs model. See Methodology for the full detail.
