Sometimes the real question runs the other direction: exactly how much of a price discount, or how much annual repair risk, would it actually take to flip your decision, as a standalone threshold you can check any real offer against.
How we calculated this
Each option's total cost sums financing interest, depreciation, fuel or energy, insurance, maintenance, repairs, and transaction costs over your horizon. The price mode solves how much the used option's effective cost would need to drop for the two to tie. The repair mode solves the same gap, then divides it by your horizon into an annualized figure, useful for weighing an ongoing repair-risk premium rather than a one-time price.
Worked example, using this page's own defaults: the used option already costs$4,600 less than new over 3 years, so in repair mode it could absorb about $1,533 more in repairs and maintenance per year before new wins instead.
What this means
- Because total cost of ownership is a straight sum of its parts, both thresholds are exact, not estimates, no search or approximation is involved.
- A "no discount needed" or "no gap needed" result means the option you're solving for already wins outright at today's numbers.

This engine combines Vehicle Economics' ownership total cost model (every ownership cost, depreciation, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs, and fees, summed over your horizon) and break-even search model (a closed-form solve where one exists, otherwise a bounded search over a stated plausible range).
