Why this comes up

"I want to be done with this loan by a certain date" is a different question than "how much do extra payments save," it needs a required number, not a forecast. Maybe you want to be debt-free before a lease ends, before a baby arrives, or just before the next vehicle purchase. This engine solves directly for the extra payment that date requires.

How we calculated this

We compute the fixed payment that would exactly amortize your current balance over the number of months between now and your target date. The gap between that figure and your stated current payment is the required extra.

Worked example, using this page's own defaults ($15,000 balance, 6% APR, $350/month current, target month 36): reaching that date requires an extra payment on top of what you're paying now, run the calculator above for the exact figure and total extra cash.

What this means

  • A target date sooner than your loan's natural payoff needs meaningfully more cash than the remaining balance alone would suggest, because scheduled payments keep chipping away regardless.
  • A target date at or after your normal payoff needs zero extra, this engine reports that honestly instead of a negative "rebate" number.

Limitations

This assumes the extra payment is affordable and consistent every month; it does not model a one-time lump sum instead (see Auto Loan Early Payoff Calculator for that), and it does not treat unverified cash as guaranteed available. See Methodology.

Methodology

This engine combines Vehicle Economics' fixed-rate amortization model (the standard loan-payment formula run out as a full month-by-month schedule) and break-even search model (a closed-form solve where one exists, otherwise a bounded search over a stated plausible range).
