Buy-Here-Pay-Here vs Traditional Financing Calculator
See exactly how much more a buy-here-pay-here lot's financing costs versus a traditional dealer or bank loan.
Why this comes up
Buy-here-pay-here lots finance buyers a traditional lender would decline, but that access comes at a real cost: a higher price on the same vehicle and a steeper effective APR. This engine puts both differences side by side against a traditional-financing alternative instead of leaving buyers to feel the cost only in the monthly payment.
How we calculated this
We run a real amortization schedule for each option at its own price and rate, then compare the two total costs (principal plus interest) directly.
Worked example, using this page's own defaults ($14,000 at 22% BHPH vs $13,000 at 9% traditional, 48 months): run the calculator above to see the exact cost difference between the two paths.
What this means
- The price difference and the rate difference both matter, a BHPH lot's higher price adds to the gap on top of the higher APR.
- If traditional financing genuinely is not available to you, the real comparison may be BHPH versus not having reliable transportation at all, not BHPH versus a loan you cannot get.
- A co-signer or a smaller loan amount can sometimes unlock traditional financing, see the Co-Signer Cost and Risk Calculator.
Limitations
This compares stated prices and rates only; it does not model BHPH-specific terms like GPS disabling devices or weekly payment schedules some lots use. SeeMethodology.
Methodology
This engine uses Vehicle Economics' fixed-rate amortization model to compute a full total-cost schedule for each financing option. See Methodology for the full detail.
