Balloon Payment Auto Loan Calculator
Get the real monthly payment and total cost of a balloon-structured auto loan.
Why this comes up
A balloon-structured loan trades a lower monthly payment for one large payment due at the end of the term, a financing structure a standard fully-amortizing loan calculator cannot represent. This engine is the first on this site to model that structure directly.
How we calculated this
The monthly payment is solved so that, after the term's regular payments, exactly the stated balloon amount remains, discounted back at your loan's own monthly rate. Total cost is every regular payment plus the balloon itself; total interest is that total minus the original principal.
Worked example, using this page's own defaults ($30,000, 6% APR, 48 months, $12,000 balloon): run the calculator above to see the exact monthly payment and total interest.
What this means
- A larger balloon lowers the monthly payment but does not lower total interest by much, and it leaves you owing a lump sum you must refinance, pay in cash, or trade in to cover.
- Compare this payment against a standard fully-amortizing loan for the same principal and term to see exactly what the lower payment is costing you.
- Plan for the balloon due date well ahead of time, most balloon loans do not automatically extend.
Limitations
This does not model refinancing the balloon at term end, a residual-value guarantee, or early payoff; it prices the loan as structured. See Methodology.
Methodology
This engine extends Vehicle Economics' fixed-rate amortization model with a solved balloon-adjusted payment formula. See Methodology for the full detail.
